SOMERSET
BUDGERIGAR SOCIETY TWO STAR OPEN SHOW
Bridgwater
Sports and Social Club 3rd September 2006
Despite fewer entries this
year Somerset B S are pleased to report that their show was very successful and
much enjoyed by all those fanciers who did manage to give their support. This
annual club event, which is usually in the top five shows for numbers of
entries and also reckoned to be one of the best-run in the entire country,
failed to achieve the required 650 birds benched to maintain its two-star
status. This was especially disappointing as it was hoped that the required
entries for two-star patronage would be achieved as the club will be
celebrating its 30th anniversary next year and already several new
initiatives have been planned to mark this milestone.
Once again, due to the
show hall being in use on the Saturday evening for a wedding party and booked
again for sequence dancing on the Sunday evening following the show, the club
faced the monumental task of moving into and out of the premises within twelve
hours. A magnificent effort from club
members and friends saw the staging erected like lightening amidst the
wonderful aroma of sausages and bacon being cooked for breakfast by Sheila
Chubb and Jenny Callow. These ladies
worked tirelessly to provide, not only breakfast, but also a delicious
two-course lunch for the hungry workers and judges.
Meanwhile
the birds were pouring in - sadly, however, far less than hoped for. Many exhibitors took advantage of the 9.15
am cut off for entries and arrived just in the nick of time. Even so, everything was ready and waiting
for the judges when they arrived at 9.30.
Thanks to George and Paul Burridge’s brilliant computer program, the
show paperwork was produced automatically enabling rosettes and certificates to
be quickly allocated and, as has become the norm at Somerset, everything was on
the cages well before the public were admitted at 2.00 pm.
Once
again one of the most gratifying sights of the day was the arrival of many
fanciers, who had not exhibited birds themselves, at the show hall at 2.00 pm
alongside many members of the local community.
An advertisement broadcast on the local radio station had obviously
caught the imagination of many of the townsfolk. Let’s hope that some of them were suitably inspired by the
fabulous birds on display to enter the hobby.
Throughout the afternoon delicious cakes and pastries (home-cooked by
members and their wives) were served with beverages by Theresa Dudley together
with Chris Wiggins and her sister. The
club was overwhelmed by the amount of invaluable help provided by the members
of Bristol B S. This was particularly
welcome as many Somerset members are new to the hobby and have little
experience of running a show. However,
they afterwards commented on how much they enjoyed the whole experience and
appreciated the knowledge they had gained.
All
in all, the show succeeded due to very had work by lots of people who had come
from far and wide to help Somerset BS and were also more than generous with
donations and sponsorship. The club
would like to thank everyone who helped at the show, entered birds, gave
donations of food for refreshments, raffle and tombola prizes and prizes for
the winners, or came in the afternoon to see the birds and chat – far too many
to mention by name – but you all know who you are! Your help and generosity made the 2006 show one to remember,
maybe not for the numbers benched, but for the great atmosphere and friendship.
Even
though the number of exhibits may have been lower than usual, the quality of
the birds was not. The judges, appeared
happy in their work and after due discussion, finally agreed that Best in Show
should be awarded to Colin Parsons’s super cinnamon sky blue cock. This bird has won many major awards for
Colin over recent show seasons. Ron
Payne won the Best Young Bird in Show.
His young sky blue cock is very large and powerful with very good face
qualities. Cornwall’s Rodney Harris
made his long journey worthwhile by being awarded both Any Age and Young Bird
Opposite Sex awards. The former is a
super opaline light green hen with powerful shoulders, which was exhibited, in
first class condition. His
award-winning young bird was an excellent dark green hen, which has good length
of body and excellent face and head qualities. Brian Sweeting had yet another
successful day, benching no fewer than ten challenge certificate winners, many
of which were placed in the section run-downs.
Brian has been awarded 48 challenge certificates in just five shows so
far this year.
In
the Champion section Colin Parsons’s Best in Show, a cinnamon sky blue cock,
obviously took the major honour, whilst Brian Sweeting took the next four
places in the champion any age section.
His big bold grey green cock was second and his stylish sky blue cock
third. Ron Payne’s afore-mentioned sky
blue cock headed the champion young birds then came Rodney Harris’s young hen,
an excellent example of a very good coloured dark green and a beautiful
hen. Brian’s super cinnamon grey green
cock, which has been a major award winner already this year, was placed third.
The
Intermediate section birds were led by a cobalt cock owned by John Harvey, a
fitting reward for someone travelling so far to exhibit. He also won the Young Bird section with an
opaline grey. Both birds were fine
examples of their varieties. The partnership of Gary Hale and Dave Davies were
placed 2nd and 3rd in the adult section with their
spangle green cock and a very smart opaline sky blue hen. They were also placed second and third in
the Young Bird section with their opaline sky blue and and a very smart young grey
hen.
Colin
and Edith Williams, from Gloucester, took top honours and second place in the
Novice Any Age section with their super grey cock, followed by a very nice
spangle hen, Pete Smith’s opaline cinnamon cock was placed third. Paul Lucas won first and second place in the
Young Bird section. Paul benched a
super wide-headed cinnamon grey cock which is a credit to him and was exhibited
in wonderful condition. Paul’s dominant
pied cock was in the second spot whilst Steve Barnett took third place with
very a nice spangle green cock.
The
Beginners Section was very well supported with numbers in excess of last year
but the Champion birds benched were down by over two hundred from last year. Bryan Collins had another fine day - he always
seems to enjoy the Somerset Show. His
very good sky blue cock which has won him many major awards was placed first.
Roger Rice’s Any Other Colour hen did him proud in second place. Bryan took third position with a very nice
dominant pied hen. Somerset’s very own
newcomer, Tony Gray, has achieved many major Beginner awards in his first show
season. He benched a very long stylish
grey green cock that many champion breeders would be pleased to own. This young cock has won Best Beginner Young
Bird at every show he has entered this year, which will most likely make him
the Buckton’s Beginner Breeder here in the West Country. Let’s hope Tony decides to make the journey
to Doncaster to contest the finals, which take place at the BS Club Show. Tony
also won his very first Challenge Certificate with a very nice double factor
spangle hen, which was awarded fourth Beginner Young Bird. In second place was a beautiful grey green
hen benched by more new Somerset BS members, Matt Currington and his partner and fianacee
Elaine Berrelly, who were exhibiting for the very first time at championship level. This was an excellent start for them in this
very challenging hobby. Gloucester’s Mike Sysum took the third spot
with his very smart dark green cock.
The
Junior section awards were dominated by Chelsie Sysum, winning Best Any Age
with her very good grey green cock which has been well-placed in the Challenge
Certificate line-up throughout the summer.
She also won the top three Young Bird awards. In first place was a good quality light green cock followed by
her yellow face cock and a cobalt cock finishing third. Somerset’s Edward Hooper took the remaining
awards in the Any Age Section and fourth young bird.
The
Somerset BS committee would like to extend their thanks to all the judges:
Roger Carr, Bob McCabe, Stuart Forbes, Mick Freeborn, Andy Thorpe and Neil
Johnson who did an excellent job
