Return to Normal for 30th Anniversary Show
The atmosphere at Somerset’s
show this year was euphoric. Numbers
entered (862) and benched (711) were almost back to normal, enabling a return
to Gold status next year. The major
awards and prizes throughout the statuses were well shared out – no exhibitor
won more than one – a result that added to the happy, friendly mood of the show. Everything turned out very well, the weather
was fine, the refreshments were delicious, the exhibitors and townsfolk came
through the doors in droves and a there was even a surprise visit from the
local paparazzi looking for Geoff Capes!
Somerset members had made a
special effort earlier in the year to enable this anniversary show to be extra special
even though the poor entry at last year’s show led to the absence of double CCs. They made donations and raised funds
throughout the year to enable every exhibitor to take away a commemorative mug
and to push the prize money up to a total of £750.00.
Once again the club faced the
monumental task of moving into and out of the premises within twelve
hours. Club members and friends make a magnificent
effort and quickly erected the staging whilst the wonderful aroma of sausages
and bacon being cooked by Sheila and Paul Chubb made their mouths water. This pair worked tirelessly to provide, not
only breakfast, but also a delicious two-course lunch for the hungry workers
and judges.
Meanwhile the birds
were pouring in, many exhibitors having taken advantage of the 9.15 am cut off
for entries and arriving in the nick of time.
Everything was ready and waiting for the judges when they arrived at
9.30. Thanks to George and Paul
Burridge’s brilliant computer program, operated this year by Dave Dudley, the
show paperwork was produced automatically enabling rosettes and certificates to
be quickly allocated and everything was on the cages well before the public
were admitted at 2.30 pm.
As has become the
norm at Somerset shows, many fanciers who had not exhibited birds themselves
still turned up to meet old friends and admire the wonderful birds on show,
many of them also helping with stewarding. An advertisement broadcast on the
local radio station once again resulted in many members of the public also
coming to have a look. This year the local paper must have heard it too, as a reporter
turned up to take some photographs. Throughout the afternoon beverages and delicious
cakes and pastries (home-cooked by members and their wives) were served by
Chris Wiggins, Val Griffin and Marlene Sweeting.
The club was once
again indebted to members of other West Country clubs, especially Bristol BS,
whose help was particularly welcome as many Somerset members are new to the
hobby and have little experience of running a show. The show’s success was due to a lot of hard work by many people
who had come from far and wide to help and who were also more than generous
with donations and sponsorship. The
club would like to thank everyone who helped at the show, entered birds, gave
donations of food for refreshments, prizes for the winners and raffle prizes,
or came in the afternoon to see the birds and chat – far too many to mention by
name – but you all know who you are!
Your help and generosity made the Somerset 30th Anniversary
Open Show a truly memorable one.
Due to the high
quality of the birds this year, the judges’ work was not easy. After due discussion, they finally agreed
that Best in Show should be awarded to Clifton and Marion Wixon’s excellent
Dark green cock. This was a very
popular result as Cliff and Marion have been regular workers at this show for
many years. Another popular result was
the awarding of Best Young Bird in Show to Paul and Stewart Griffin’s very
powerful and beautifully feathered grey green hen - their best result to
date. Brian Sweeting won the Best
Opposite Sex Any Age award with his powerful grey green hen, benched in super
condition and showing herself very well.
Margaret and Peter Dark won the Best Opposite Sex Young Bird award with
their superb young lutino cock. This
super young bird did very well earlier in the day, beating 79 other lutinos including
the Any Age entries, to win the Challenge Certificate. These results were especially pleasing
because all of the major winners work tirelessly year after year at the
Somerset show.
In the Champion
section Clifton and Marion’s Cock obviously took Best Champion Any Age, second
was Arthur Piper’s beautiful albino cock and third was Brian Sweeting’s grey
green cock. Brian also took the fourth
place with his Best Opposite Sex in Show winner, a grey green hen. Best Champion Young Bird was Stuart and Paul
Griffin’s grey green hen followed in second place by Peter and Margaret Dark’s
lutino cock. Third position was awarded
to Denis Curtis’s dominant pied sky blue cock - a really showy bird.
The Intermediate any
age section was headed by Brian Harvell who benched a well-presented opaline
cock. Adrian Duck took the next two positions; second with his sky blue
cock and third with his top class cinnamon grey green cock. Adrian also filled most of the other top
seven places in the Any Age section. In the Young Bird section the prizes were very
well shared out. Gerry Moller’s striking
spangle hen took the top place and second was awarded to Brian Harvell’s admirable
young cinnamon green hen. Dave Dudley was
third making a rare appearance with his normals - he is better known for his rare
varieties but on this occasion benched a very nice young sky blue cock.
In the Novice section,
Colin Williams took the top spot with his well-known grey cock - this is a very
special bird for someone from the lower sections to have bred. Mike Saunders made his long journey from
Swansea worthwhile taking second place with his lutino cock. In third was Bryan Collins, a regular
supporter of the Somerset show who also comes from South Wales. Bryan also took the next three places. He also did himself proud by taking the
first two places in the Young Bird section.
Pete Smith took third spot with a recessive pied, a very good young bird
- quite an achievement to get this variety up to such a standard.
The Beginners section
was very well supported. Twenty-one
exhibitors battled it out and top place in the Any Age section went to Stuart
McMullen. Stuart’s top quality grey
cock was exhibited in almost perfect condition. Paul Chubb, one of Somerset’s
newcomers, continued his successful season by benching a super grey green cock -
a very long bird with an excellent face and spot-line. Tim Potter has been known in the past for
his yellow faces, this year was no exception - his yellow face grey cock took
third in a very strong line up. John
Stevens took top place in the Young Bird section, his opaline cock was an
excellent bird and a very good example of the variety. Richard Hooper, another breeder from the
Somerset club, took second place with a very useful spangle sky blue yellow
face hen. Stuart McMullen followed his
Any Age success in this very hotly-contested section with his yellow face cock
being placed third.
This year there were five
junior exhibitors, something of a record in recent years. As in the other statuses, the prizes were
well shared out. James Bonner from
Wiltshire took the top Any Age award with yet another good grey cock - the greys
were a very strong class throughout all sections. Second place went to Edward Hooper’s spangle cock, which was a
credit to him. Greg Cameron was third
with a grey green cock, another very smart bird. Anna-Maria Dungey headed the Young Bird section with an opaline
cinnamon hen, a bird that should take her forward during the coming breeding
season. Nathan Saunders, from Swansea, took the next three positions. His lutino cock was placed second in the
section and his any other colour hen was third.
The Somerset BS
committee would like to extend their thanks to all the judges: Geoff Capes,
Jeff Attwood, Rick Watts, Maurice Roberts, Steve Cox and Tony Smith.
