SOMERSET BS TWO STAR OPEN SHOW

SOMERSET BUDGERIGAR SOCIETY OPEN SHOW

Bridgwater Sports and Social Club 31st August 2008

The day of the show saw a little rain but compared to the weather of previous weeks you could say it was a fine day. Somerset members and friends worked in good humour to erect the staging on the morning of the show before the exhibitors arrived with their birds.  In the meantime, Sheila and Paul Chubb were busy cooking Tim Potter’s delicious sausages and bacon to provide a welcome breakfast for those who had left their beds so early in the day.   Once breakfast was out of the way, this pair worked tirelessly to provide the hungry workers and judges with a scrumptious roast lunch.  After lunch Val Griffin and her sister took over the kitchen to serve cakes and drinks throughout the afternoon.

The club was once again indebted to members of neighbouring West Country clubs for their support, especially the Cornish boys and members of Bristol BS.   The show’s success was due to a lot of hard work by many people who had come from far and wide to help and who were also more than generous with donations and sponsorship.  The club would like to thank everyone who helped at the show, entered birds, gave donations of food for refreshments, prizes for the winners and raffle prizes, or came in the afternoon to see the birds.

Club members had made a special effort earlier in the year to raise over £600.00 to swell the show fund.  This enabled all exhibitors to be presented with a commemorative mug and pushed the total prize money a total of £750.00.   It was good to see the major awards shared out amongst four exhibitors who are all regular supporters of the show and work hard every year to make it a success.

The Best in Show bird was a super normal grey cock exhibited by Brian Sweeting, another Best in Show win for Brian in what has been his best season to date. Margaret and Peter Dark’s super young Yellow face cock was awarded Best Young Bird in Show.  This very popular couple have found Somerset to be a good hunting ground over the past couple of show seasons.   Paul and Stewart Griffin’s very powerful and beautifully feathered young grey green hen took the best opposite sex young bird and Clifton Wixon won the Best Opposite Sex Any Age award with his powerful light green hen, benched in super condition and showing herself very well.

In the intermediate section local boy Steve Rich completed the double winning both any age and young bird awards, Steve has had another great show season, a wonderful ambassador for the hobby who travels hundreds of miles every year supporting just about all of the western counties major shows.  Stuart McMullen also had a worthwhile journey down from Gloucester; he also did the double winning both major awards in the Novice section

The beginner section was headed by two of our good friends from Cornwall Ian Harris took the any age top prize and his good mate Steve Bennett won the young bird award.  Chelsea Sysum won all the main prizes in the Junior section, she has a wonderful team of birds that is a credit to her, some of her birds finishing well up in the challenge certificate line-up
